Welcome

AI assistants (MCP)

Ask Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or any other assistant that supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP) about weather at a place: the forecast, recent rain totals, hourly and minute-by-minute precipitation, soil moisture, temperature, and more.

Server URL: https://api.precip.ai/mcp

Connect

Claude and ChatGPT: add a custom connector and paste the server URL.

Cursor and other MCP clients: add a remote server to your MCP config:

Code
{ "mcpServers": { "precip": { "url": "https://api.precip.ai/mcp" } } }

The first time you connect, your assistant opens a Precip sign-in page. Sign in with Google, Apple, Microsoft, or email (this creates a free account if you don't have one), then choose Allow. You can find the same URL in the Precip app under Settings → API & AI assistants.

What you get

Free accountAny Precip plan
Weather lookups25 per month100 per day
Lookups per minute1010
Locations per lookup11
Date range per lookup31 days31 days

Only successful weather lookups count. Connecting and listing the available tools are free. The free month starts with your first lookup. When you run out, your assistant tells you when the allowance resets and how to get more.

Upgrade to a Precip plan for 100 lookups a day. On a plan, your assistant and your personal API key share the same daily allowance.

Assistants sometimes run many lookups at once. If you hit the per-minute limit, ask your assistant to make one lookup at a time.

Your saved locations

Your assistant can see the locations saved in your Precip account, both personal ones and those of your organizations, so you can ask about them by name: "How much rain did the north field get this week?" It can also save a new location when you ask it to.

  • Listing and saving locations don't count as weather lookups. The weather lookups for those locations count as usual.
  • A new location counts toward your plan's location limit. At the limit, your assistant gives you a link to upgrade.
  • To save a location to an organization, you need the admin or editor role in it. Clients of an organization can save their own locations.

Use a personal API key instead

If your client can't open a sign-in page, connect with your personal API key (included with any Precip plan). Send it as a header:

Code
Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY

Or add it to the URL: https://api.precip.ai/mcp?apiKey=YOUR_API_KEY. Copy the key from Settings → API & AI assistants in the Precip app.

Commercial use

Free and personal access is for non-commercial use. For commercial use, many locations per request, bulk export, or higher limits, book a demo.

Pay per use

https://api.precip.ai/mcp-x402 has the same tools with no account or key. You pay per lookup with stablecoins. See pay-per-use.
